Kiwi Writers - Writing for FUN!
Posted by: kerrynangell
Here at Kiwi Writers we do a lot of fun challenges to get people writing, but we have an ulterior motive...we want you to have FUN!
Kiwi Writers was founded out of the amazing amount of fun had during NaNoWriMo 2006. A mix of great company, a crazy idea, writing and the achievement made it what it was. We want to inspire people and help them make that leap that they’ve been thinking of, maybe even dreaming of.
There’s a lot going on at Kiwi Writers and this will only increase with the launch of Member Challenges on 15 September. One the tools used to get our behinds in the chair and our fingers on the keyboard or putting that pen to paper is guilt. Signing up for a challenge means announcing to the world (well, almost) that you are going to achieve something. Seeing others progress towards your common goal and encouraging you along the way provides us with this guilt. However, we all need to be realistic about how much writing we can get done and how much writing we want to get done. We need to balance it with the other goals, joys and responsibilities we have in life. When you’re considering a challenge seriously take into account the amount of time it will take out of other things in your life. There will always be more challenges and it’s important that when you accept a challenge you have fun doing it. For longer challenges circumstances do change. It’s a stunning thing about life that the dreaded other thing will come up at the most inconvenient time.
"Once pressure is put on any activity it loses something, becomes a chore. Writing shouldn't be like that, it should be fun foremost!"

This isn’t a get out of writing free card. Writing gets hard. Even writing 2000 words for our Zing Thing challenges can be a struggle and when you attempt something like SoCNoC you can expect a few days to a week or more of struggling. Why do it then? There is a great amount of satisfaction and fun to be had by pushing yourself and seeing just what you can accomplish. Even after writing 50,000 words in a month three times now I learn something new and find myself being pushed harder. I would never have thought I could write 6,000 words in half a day to win the Waitangi Weekend Word Wace. I had all but given up until that final evening when I decided to give it one more go.
Accept the Challenge. Write for FUN!

gaye-belle's quote above reminds me of this one too:
Creative work is play. It is free speculation using materials of one's chosen form.
