I've just switched point of view from third person limited to first person 53,000 words into the rewrite of my NaNovel.
I've been considering whether first person would be better suited to the story for a while. The story is all about my MC, what she discovers, how she changes and how she changes her reality. I was writing in the middle of a word war for SoCNoC and suddenly I had written a sentence in first person. It just flowed out and after I got over my surprise I continued almost unphased. So, how do you decide what point of view will suit your story? 12 Jun 2008 19:19:23
No Excuses. Just Write.

I usually find any limited perspective a pain in the ass on first draft, because I often don't know where the story is going, or indeed if it will go at all. My HD is a graveyard for the corpses of good ideas gone bad!
So I start with omni and, once I come to edit the completed draft, look to see if I can tighten the POV. I dislike stories where important elements of the story are reported rather than happen, which makes me less comfortable with writing limited POV. 13 Jun 2008 09:07:24 |

I don't even plan in that area, the story comes as I type, I guess it is my MC's story, the theme works on how she gains confidence, a growing process where she becomes a leader. Then I've switched to other characters, giving them a section to tell their side of their story. These characters seem to be the threat to my MC's progression, but I am sure it will work out for the best in the conclusion. :)

Hmm. Well, my current story is in first person, and it's working really well. My story concerns a lot of personal development for one character as well, and by having it in first person, it limits the reader's ability to understand the people around her. Which, for my story, is a good thing.
But I also once wrote a story that was in first person, but it was definitely meant to be a third person point of view novel. My next novel(s) are most likely to going to be in third person. I find it helps sometimes if I write a little of the story in my head in both ways. Then I try to decide beforehand which might suit it better. It also depends on the type of story. Introspection ones, with a lot of one-character development, are generally better off as first person, in my experience. 21 Jun 2008 00:50:42 |
