My goal is to finish the first draft of last year's NaNoWriMo novel, 'How To Kill A Fairytale Princess'.

I got to 50,000 words by the end of November, then forgot all about the stupid thing until March. Editing so far has consisted of deleting 20,000 words (and all of the first four chapters), and completely rearranging the plot.

I start a Creative Writing MLitt course in September, so I need to get this draft done before then, as I'll be snowed under with writing.

Of course, August means The Edinburgh Book Festival and a two-week holiday to South Africa, so it's not as easy as it seems! Hopefully by writing a little bit every day - I'm aiming for 500-1,000 words) - I'll get it done.

Good luck Clara!
I think doing some each day is the best habit to get into. I try my best to do that each day too, around 2,000 words.
Now when I dont do it, well I feel weird and its like Ive lost something, and get nervous..hehe
Rewriting a story I think is harder then actually writing it the first time. So much more to contend with and remembering what needs to be changed later in the story to keep it all flowing nicely.
Hope you also will pass on some nice writing tips when you start the writing course in september.

Good Luck, End is Nigh.

My idea of hell is being trapped in a room with no books!

Good luck, clara! I know what you mean. I'm going on holiday for two weeks this month too, so not sure how much writing I'll get done. But I'm going to try!

Good luck Clara. It's funny how xengab said about doing just a little every day. Now, I've not actually managed to start my "End is Nigh" challenge yet (that's a bad Andy), but I have been doing other things I've been meaning to for a while. Not sure it counts, but yeah, just a little a day, goes a long way :-)

So true about the little bit every day. Even if you miss a day, it's easier to recoup the next rather than having that massive total hanging over your head.

And at least by rewriting, you know that your idea is strong - strong enough that it holds your attention and you know it's worth going back to.
Way to go!

Well, the novel progress is still excruciatingly slow, but I did manage to finish a short story today.

I find short fiction difficult, so I'm pleased about that. My general word count is inching up, even though they're not novel words!

Keep going, Clara! You're right, word count is word count.
Short fiction's a great way to get inspired and take time out from the dreaded novel. Some of my best short fiction has sprung out frustration at being 'trapped' in a novel for a while. Keep going!

oh, and killer name for a novel, btw. Intriguing!

I find short fiction difficult as well. However, I'm slowly discovering the benefits it holds for when I want to get to know my characters a little bit more before a big story. I've slowly been coming to the conclusion that I should write more short stories that have nothing to do with my novels... it's nice to be able to get to 'The End' in a day or two (or more, but much faster than a novel). It's a relief every now and then. ^_^

And sometimes it's all you need to get that boost to finish your novel! I know it works well with me. :)

I hadn't written short stories for ages, focusing on novels and got back to it with some early Kiwi Writer challenges. I loved getting a whole story written in a few days and getting to THE END.
