I've finished! 101,819 words, and it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would. Phew!

Congrats, lilar. That's great!

What's next for that story?

The next thing I guess is to read through and edit. After that, I'm not sure. The previous draft was short-listed for the Richard Webster Poular Fiction Award, and was a semi-finalist in Amazon's Break into Print contest, and I've already established that NZ publishers aren't interested. I think it might do better overseas, but so many publishers only accept submissions through agents, so any suggestions about who to approach (agents or publishers) would be great.

I would suggest looking through magazines (on and offline) aimed at your book's main genre. Those often have several publishers listed. And if you can get an excerpt of your book into those magazine, the publishers may come to you instead. :)

That's a good suggestion - I'll see what I can find. Since I last wrote, I've gone through and changed a few things, which i think have improved it.

Editing can be hard, especially when you've already had such acclaim for it! Congrats on that count.

These weren't in my original challenge, but I've now edited and proofed the manuscript, and written what I think are a pretty good cover letter and synopsis - with the kind and excellent help of someone on another writing group. She also sent me contact details of a couple of UK agents who deal with fantasy books (recommended by her own agent, who doesn't). So all I need to do now is get new ink cartridges for my computer... :-)

I sent out two submissions last Friday, and have two more to send when I can afford some more international reply coupons - can't send a sae as the return postage is from the UK. So I suppose it's a waiting game, now, and deciding what to work on next.
