word wars are when people(either over the internet or in person) set a time limit - say 10, 15, 20, or 30 minutes.
Once everyone is ready, someone keeps time and you all write as much as you can in that period of time. At the end you can compare how many words you wrote during the 'war'.
Some people war by themselves, others with other people, either way it can be a good way to set everything else out of your mind and just focus on the writing. Many people find that they can get quite a good number of words down in a short amount of time doing it this way. It's a lot of fun doing it with others, spurs you into writing as fast as you can and getting that word count climbing, very handy for those 50k word per month challenges!

Yep, I guess I'll be relying on word wars towards the end of the month :-)

Cassie's a bit of a winner in the warring front, she regularly gets over 500 words in 10 mins. I average a respectable 300+ but only manage 400 every now and again. Kerryn usually beats me with 400+ (though I usually try and war with her when she's on a tricky scene, so I can win)!

Everyone, what is your average for word wars? 10 or 15 minutes or whatever you usually do?

I average usually around 520 for a 15 minute word war and about 300 for a 10. I do so many in a day, they really help! Lot's of fun too because you just write.
