Write to music.
How many of you listen to music while writing? I am sure it's alot but did you know this can make you write faster!
There is a science behind music, just think for a moment, what music do they play while you are shopping for your SoCNoC snacks?
What you hear will depend on time of day, do they want you lingering, do they want you out out out or do they want to keep you happy?
Take a moment to think about music while driving, we all have that one album that causes us to speed..Now think, if you listened to that while writing, is it possible your fingers will blaze across the keyboard? I do, and I use this knowledge to my advantage. Proof is in my word count people. If I am feeling low or down, I will switch the music to something I can dance too or one that I know makes me speed in the car. My favorite "hope the cops don't see me" album is Celldweller.
Last weekend I write am insane amount of words (to me anyways) and I was able to do it by listening to that album and 2 others.
When I need to sink into the writing feeling I turn on Sarah Brightman (her music, not the actual person, that would be wrong!) The tone, slowing music just snapped me into the writing mood, usually without fail. I have 2 movies that sucker me into wanting to write as well, I have yet to see either of them all the way through in around six months.
Becareful in what you choose, constantly using the same album can result in the "oh wow that really sucks" issue. What I mean by this is, you can program that little creative brain of yours so switch into writing mode whenever it hears a certain album or even song. I found this out the hard way. For six months I listened to one album every time I wrote, it was not an issue until one day I was walking around the mall and I heard the first song from that album playing. I had the strongest urge to sit down and write.
I stopped shopping because my desire to find whatever it was I was there for, had gone. All I wanted to do was write.
Getting out of that mode of thinking took alot of doing, even now if I heard the song I can easily slip into writing mode. So I switch out my albums so that does not happen again. Nothing is worse then having a panic attack because you cannot find something to write on:)
A good pair of noise cancelling headphones, several albums of music and a full battery on your music player can mean the difference between 100 words and 1000 words.
It also helps block out the nasty outside world that wants to come annoy you, and stops you from being as distracted.
There are also many free radio stations that you can select music you like to play.
Give it a try, I dare you!
I totally agree. Music makes my writing. I have different playlists set up for different types of scenes too. Harder, rocky music for action, slower, mellow tunes for slower scenes. Sometimes I write without any music, but thats usually when I'm trying to clear my head because I'm not sure what writing 'mood' I'm in.
