Using a Novel to Create a Novel

Does the comma go before the quote or after? How about dialog, does it always go in a new paragraph or not?

These are things you don't want to think about when you're rushing headlong through a novel writing month. Do you want to keep a style reference nearby to check when you need it? I can't think of anything that would interrupt the flow more.

Far better than a style reference - just keep a copy of your favourite novel nearby. It's always fun to re-read, and you can leaf through in a few seconds and find examples of how these things should work. Why stop there? It can give you ideas on style, correct dialog and how to set scenes. It doesn't get any better than your favourite novel to act as style guide, motivator and a fun distraction.

Good luck on your latest masterpiece.
