 Many of the best stories have fallen apart because research has not been done adequately. Even in fantasy and world building, some research is required.  A beast the size of an elephant will not, scientifically, will not fly!  And even magic has its limitations.  This is where research is an important part to play in your writing. 

 Map the terrain of your story and find one or more topics (say horse riding, medieval agriculture, Japanese religious practices) that are relevant to your story or that you find interesting and start researching! Read as much information about it as you can and find those treasures that will become critical to your story.
