Inspiration in the most unlikely of places

When I first heard that this month would be about inspiration, lots of ideas came to mind (funny that!)

But then I thought I should probably do something a little mor personal.  How I was inspired by my latest novel idea.

It started in December, while watching the History Channel on Sky TV - it is not often we find little gems to watch on this channel, but this particular night, there was nothing on, and we were wondering what to watch.  There was a documentary about Greek Mythology - so we watched it.

The story was about Medusa, the snake haired gorgan sister, and there were many tales of how she came to be - that she was born that way, cursed that way, then they covered her death at the hands of Perseus.

Something about the telling fired my imagination, and before I knew it, I had printed out reams of paper on Ancient Greece, Medusa, Perseus, Athena and Posiedon.  The next thing I knew, a story idea was springing up in mind.

Even today, while I have Medusa on the back burner, she is itching for me to tell her tale, tell it like it might have happened, about a naive and beautiful adolescent girl who was trapped by a god and cursed by a goddess to be a hideous monster, and the man sent to slay her, fell in love with the woman, before he found the monster.

So next time you are looking for inspiration, try closing your eyes, listening to the sounds of the world around you, look up to the skys and watch the clouds, or turn on your telly, and check out the history channel.  You never know what might inspire you!

This is just it. Inspiration is everywhere. You just have to open yourself up to the possibilities, give yourself permission to daydream and to follow those crazy facts of life and stories from history that interest you.

P.S. Medusa creeps me out! Most recently in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. It's because of the snakes. I just can't handle the way they slither and move so fast. I do love the idea of telling the story of the girl behind Medusa.

Its a fascinating story, and there are so many versions of how she came to be the serpant haired lady!  And the version I like just extended itself to so many possibilities.  I can't wait for June to start working on it!  Lots of research had to be done though - so many unknowns, but I have a small forest in my writing pack, so shouldn't be too hard to cobble together a half decent story!
