Hi everyone,
I've recently stumbled across this website by chance when I was looking for some inspiration online. What a great website! I love the friendly and supportive tone to it.
I am new to writing, I don't even know if I would call myself a writer. When does someone start calling themselves a writer? I guess it's when you feel like you are one.
I've started writing a few months ago, driven by a slight obsession with the characters of Cheryl and Judd from Outrageous Fortune. For those of you who don't know this NZ show it has screened for 5 series, with a 6th in production, and the last episode of the 5th series ended with a huge cliffhanger back in Aug/Sept 09.
So for months after that, I put up with ideas and stories in my head which would not go away about how the story of Cheryl and Judd could carry on. So one day I decided to write a little post on the Outrageous forum.
Ever since that first post in December I have been encouraged by the other members to carry on, and is has turned into a rather long story with 42000 words so far.
I enjoy coming up with new ideas and thinking about what's going to happen next even though I never sat down and planned an outline from the start. The rewards are the comments and speculations from others which I get hours after posting - a sort of instant gratification!
So I've discovered a new hobby, and I'm starting to dread the moment when I will have to bring this story to an end (when Series 6 will air and we will know what is really going to happen), because so far, I've never had the desire or urge to write about anything else. I don't know if I could come up with the ideas for different characters?! I've decided to enrol in a fiction writing weekend workshop in the upcoming school holidays to broaden my mind and maybe get some ideas on how to start something different.
So, after this rather long introduction, I'd just like to say hello, and if you want to find out about my version of Cheryl and Judd go to
http://www.outrageousfortune.co.nz/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=1615&...
(Any supportive feedback would be great but please consider that it is a huge step for me to go from a slightly obsessed OF Fan community to a community of writers whose standards in terms of plot, language etc. inevitably must be much higher. And I don't mean that in a demeaning sort of way to the people on the OF forum. If it wasn't for their encouragement I wouldn't have carried on.)

Hey, welcome to the site :-) It's great to have you with us, and great to hear that you've been having heaps of fun with Outrageous Fortune fan fic (I guess it would be called that?!) It will be interesting to see how the next season turns out!

Good on you for enrolling in a weekend workshop, it sounds like a great way to learn more about the craft and see if you can come up with some other ideas, by the sounds o fit you're very creative so it shouldn't be too much of a jump to invent some characters of your own to write about :-)

Welcome kakapo (dig your avatar BTW), don't worry about your level, we're all at different stages here and are pretty supportive, so post away with any questions you have.

I think fan fiction is awesome way to ease into writing, as most of the work is done before you start and once you're confident you can experiment with your own ideas.

kakapo, that is what this writing group is all about, supporting you in your writing, no matter what it is.

Well done on entering a writing workshop, you will be surprised how much you get out of it, and you will one day find the courage to create your own characters and breathe life into them.

Thank you everyone for making me feel welcome here and for your positive outlook! @Timb5 - excuse my ignorance but what does dig your avatar mean? I know what avatar is, and I've heard of dig-it but could you please explain? Thanks.

Hahahahaha,

'Dig' is jazz slang for 'I like it' ;)

No-one's every asked me that before. Cheers :)

Duh! I was thinking techie-talk when I saw avatar. Even after 13 years in NZ sometimes I just don't get the slang! Never mind, glad it made you laugh. And I'm glad that you dig my avatar!

Welcome kakapo. I love your avator too. :) And I love Outrageous Fortune and OMG about the finale!! I'm not surprised that it inspired you to write something. You'll have to let us know how you find the writing workshop. I'm sure you'll learn a whole lot from it.

Also, the definition of a writer is one who writes so go ahead and claim the title as your own!

Hey kakapo. I just read some your Outrageous Fortune snippets and they're good! Welcome to the writing journey. It's challenging and there's always something new to learn but it's also hugely rewarding.

Haha, double OMG about that finale! I was so shocked that night I couldn't sleep. It was too intense!

Welcome, kakapo. I love that you wrote about Cheryl and Judd, their relationship is fantastic.
